Wyoming

John Robinson:  the main line dance instructor at the four-day Rocky Mountain Dance Festival.   Besides being an excellent teacher, John has won 40 first place titles in national and international line dance competitions.  The back of his shirt said, "DANCE:   Nobody ever drowned in sweat."

We stayed at a campground in Bar Nunn and commuted to the dance festival in Casper.   During a morning walk, Bruce caught this antelope grazing (appropriately) on Antelope Rd. in Bar Nunn.   This unusual town was built on a former airport.   All the streets were former runways and the building in the picture was an airplane hanger--now it's a boat dealership.

Devil's Tower National Monument in northeast Wyoming is a rock climber's paradise.   Also, Close Encounters of a Third Kind was filmed there.  The volcanic structure, 867 ft. high from its base, is composed of column-like rocks with long crevices between each column.  A Sioux legend says the crevices are bear claw marks.  Whatever their origin, they are perfect places for rock climbers to insert wedges, cams, and other rope-holding devices so they can scale to the top and then swing from their ropes to descend (repel).   From a bench on the  Tower Loop Trail we watched climbers scale the south side and then swing down, calling to their partners "Belay on" or "Belay off" when they wanted the rope let out or eased off.
